Psychiatrist dedicated to BPD and Canadian champion swimmer continues to make waves for Sashbear!
Dr. Marilyn Korzekwa, a 59 year old Hamilton psychiatrist who has dedicated her career to the research and treatment of BPD, continues to make waves for Sashbear.
On August 11, 2016, Dr. Korzekwa successfully completed the 20 miles swim across Cape Cod Bay: P2P from Plymouth to Provincetown, Massachusetts in 13 hours 6 minutes. Marilyn became the 7th person, and first Canadian, to ever complete this swim.
This was Marilyn's third consecutive marathon swim, raising funds for The Sashbear Foundation. Previous "Sashbear" swims include June 25 2016 - the Lake of Bays in Dwight Muskoka and March 18, 2016 - Cook Strait NZ.
We are excited that Korzekwa is fundraising for Sashbear with this swim. This money will help Sashbear continue to fund training of mental health professionals in evidence-based treatment of BPD, and education programs for families and in schools. Korzekwa says the illness, which has a suicide rate of 10%, can be treated. However, more treatment programs are desperately needed, as in Canada, suicide is the second highest cause of death for youth aged 10-24.

Marilyn Korzekwa is an accomplished marathon swimmer and then some. She swam across the English Channel in 2011, and became the first Canadian to complete the Triple Crown of marathon swimming (English Channel, Catalina, Manhattan) in 2014. Most recently, in March of 2016, Marilyn became the first Canadian to swim the Cook Strait in New Zealand, her first swim raising funds for Sashbear.
